War Memories 전쟁의 기억

In spite of the pressures to remain silent about the past, Korean Americans retain vivid and diverse private memories of the Korean War. When survivors choose to share them, what emerges is a collective memory of untold suffering, compassion, and paradox.

과거에 대해 침묵하고 있어야 한다는 압력에도 불구하고 재미교포들은 한국전쟁에 대해 생생하고 다양한 사적인 기억을 유지하고 있다. 생존자들이 이 기억을 나누고자 할 때, 알려지지 않은 고통, 공감 그리고 역설로 이루어진 집단적 기억이 나타난다.

“All Korean peasants wear white, so they’re not supposed to bomb people who dressed in white. They were just working in the field and all of a sudden, plane was just bombing. I was so scared. The plane came very low. They could even see the peasant but they did it anyway.” - Song Park
